Jeff Ehmann, Co-founder at MicroMech

1. What does MicroMech do?

MicroMech sends expert auto mechanics directly to the customer’s home or workplace. We offer 80 per cent of auto services onsite and customers pay between 10 to 30 per cent less, compared to traditional shops.

2. What inspired you to start? What problem are you solving?

After I had a poor auto service experience, I knew there had to be a better way. I realized how broken the auto service industry is; the industry is facing a lot of problems - transparency and technology are lacking, and customers don’t trust staff.

Further research showed that mechanics are also highly unhappy at traditional service shops because of poor compensation and increasing pressure to upsell from shop owners. This inspired us to start working to improve the industry for both customers and mechanics.

MicroMech is actively solving these problems and we have received great feedback from both customers and mechanics!

3. How did you go about building your team?

We have eight full-time team members in our office and several expert auto mechanics on our platform and we’re currently hiring intermediate and senior level software developers.

We built our team by looking for top talent who share our vision for the future of the automotive industry and want to help us get there.

4. What are your greatest achievements so far?

Some of our greatest achievements include building our team (both in the office and on our platform), raising over $2M, reaching thousands of customers, partnering with major brands like SkipTheDishes and NAPA, and getting such incredible feedback from the market.

5. What are your future goals for your company?

One year from now, we would like to be operational in the United States. Long term, we want to operate the largest mobile mechanic platform in North America. We want to lead the way for the future of the automotive industry with the exciting developments that we have on the go.

Startup Calgary has helped MicroMech evolve by leveraging their network in several capacities. They have made connections for us, shared exciting advancements and press about our company, and have helped showcase our company through events like Startupfest in Montreal and Launch Party 2018. 7. What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs who want to take their idea from the back of a napkin to the marketplace?

Don’t put it off. Start today. Validate your concept first. Build later.

Being a founder is an extremely difficult, exhausting, emotionally and physically-challenging journey, but it’s also rewarding. Get connected to like-minded individuals and groups around you and lean on them for support.

8. Who do you look up to in Calgary’s startup community? Which companies are doing cool things?

There are so many amazing companies in Calgary right now. Just look at the Launch Party 2018 lineup! If I had to pick a few personal favourites, I like what Deepwater Farms, Stellaralgo and ATTAbotics are doing.

9. If you could have done one things differently while building your startup, what would it be?

Honestly, there are thousands of small things we could have done differently - but I think that’s the journey every founder goes through. You don’t know what’s going to work and what’s not until you try. There’s no sense regretting decisions you’ve made. Simply learn and move forward.

10. What was the biggest surprise or obstacle you encountered while building your startup and what did you learn?

We’ve all heard that building a company is hard. I’ve been learning just how hard it is and how long it takes. Nothing happens overnight. You need perseverance and an unwavering focus towards your goals to make it happen.
