Web Development Basics: JavaScript

  • ATB Entrepreneur Centre 1110 17 Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB, T2T 0B4 Canada (map)

Hosted by Lighthouse Labs

Want a taste of the world of a Web Developer? Join us for a free evening of learning to code!

Led by members of the Lighthouse Labs team, come introduce yourself to the world's most popular programming language: JavaScript! We'll be covering the basics of JS for people with little to no coding experience, where you'll get the chance to explore the fundamentals of web development by building a web-based chatroom in the same vein as Twitch or Slack.

You'll be using HTML, CSS and JavaScript to build your app step by step with the help of our instructors, mentors and your workshop peers. The goal of the workshop is to give you an overview of what goes into building a web application, and hopefully spark a passion to learn more!

We'll be covering:

- JavaScript, including jQuery and Node.js

- HTML and CSS

- Brackets (

If you find yourself ahead of the class, we have stretch goals that will help you take your app to the next level with neat features and customization. No coding experience is necessary!

Any laptop computer can be used. You will need a modern Web browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, and a GitHub account. You will also need to download Brackets in advance.
